The Spot revamp bridges intu and Cathedral Quarter

Work has now started on the £1.2 million redevelopment of The Spot in Derby's St Peters Quarter with the aim of breathing new life into the area and increasing footfall between intu Derby and the Cathedral Quarter.

The new design includes a large circular sculpture which pays homage to the circles found in Derby's industries including the jet engines at Rolls-Royce and the cogs in clocks at Smith of Derby.

There will also be a low wall – made by Smith of Derby – which will feature events of Derby's history including the first car leaving Toyota in 1992, Derby County winning the FA cup in 1946, Rolls-Royce opening a factory in 1907 and the opening of Derby Arena just last year.

The work is part of Derby City Council's partnership with the St Peters Quarter BID and is funded through the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

Peter Gadsby, representing D2N2, said: “I think intu has created a market in terms of international brands, and independent brands are showing growth in the Cathedral Quarter now. The success has moved up to St Peter's Cross and you can see how vibrant that area is.

Deputy Leader of Derby City Council, Martin Rawson, said: “We want to create an environment that people want to spend time in. St Peter's Cross has proved to be a success, so hopefully that will be the case at The Spot.”
