Community Aim to Save Friar Gate Bridge
Started 18 months ago, residents of the New Zealand area of Derby grouped together to preserve the iconic Friar Gate Bridge.
Designed and built in the 1870s by world-renowned master of iron work, Andrew Handyside, the bridge is a very public and highly visible reminder of Derby's pre-eminence in railway engineering.
The group, named The Friends of Friar Gate Bridge has attracted a wider membership and a delegation met with officers of Derby City Council.
Whilst delighted with the substantial amount from Derby City Council towards the bridge's restoration, the sum covers only part of the full cost. However, The National Heritage Lottery Fund is interested in contributing to the restoration costs with one criteria that requires community involvement.
The Friends of Friar Gate Bridge aim to co-ordinate and galvanise that involvement and will be holding a public meeting for anybody wanting to get involved. Meeting at The Golden Eagle on Agard Street at 7:30pm on Monday 18th May, the trust will require a chairman, secretary and treasurer.
