Derby City Living Starts with Students
Bondholder Derby City Council's planning committee has approved a 350-bed student accommodation development in the city centre, subject to a section 106 agreement.
Property developer London & UK Property will construct a seven-storey building designed by GT Architects on the site of the former Sixt Car Hire depot on Cathedral Road, close to the Joseph Wright Campus of Derby College and the Grade-I Listed Derby Cathedral. Accommodation will be made up of en-suite room clusters of varying in a U-shaped building. In addition to the student rooms, there will also be common areas, a laundry room and a management office, along with storage areas for 176 cycles.

“The development will provide a boost to the local economy and deliver an important element of the wider regeneration of the Cathedral Quarter. The University of Derby is becoming a major international centre for educational excellence and this scheme will complement that with an unrivalled living experience for students in the city.”
The development is due to commence in the next couple of weeks with a target opening date of August 2016.
This is the first development since Derby’s City Living Initiative was launched which seeks to increase the number of people living in central Derby.
A £6.5 million Derby City Living Fund is a funding pot which has been created by Derby City Council to support the conversion of redundant office space into residential stock, whilst Marketing Derby’s City Living brochure provides key information on the city alongside a shopping list of potential residential development sites in the city.
Approval for the scheme comes following collaboration between Marketing Derby, who formally registered their support for the scheme, and the Local Planning Authority who worked closely with London & UK Property to progress the application.
