Small but most definitely mighty
Saturday 5th Dcember saw an army of Small Business Supporters from across Derby and Derbyshire attend the eagerly anticipated Small Business Saturday celebration hosted at the Council House.
Adam Buss, CEO of Derby QUAD hosted the event and was joined by Dame Margaret Beckett MP and Deputy Leader of Derby City Council, Councillor Martin Rawson.
Showcasing their products and services, small businesses in the area – and indeed across the country – took centre stage to highlight the valued contribution that they each make to the local economy.
With an estimated 5 million businesses taking part across the country, local businessperson and owner of Bondholder Essential Print Services Yvonne Gorman was tasked with spreading the word. Yvonne was overwhelmed with the response of everyone involved and commented: “I was thrilled with the support in the run up to the event and the response on the day was overwhelmingly positive. I sincerely hope that all those who attended and exhibited will think differently about small businesses and continue to support them.”
Martin Rawson, Deputy Leader at Derby City Council said: “Derby City Council are proud of the valuable contribution that small businesses make to our local economy and the offer of free parking was a show of support to local retailers as part of the Small Business Saturday celebration. The event was a great success that the Council were proud to host at the Council House.”
Official statistics show that in the 24 hours following the event, an estimated £623 million was spent with small businesses across the UK. This number is a whopping increase of approximately £119 million on last year's total and an increase in spending of 24%.
