Phil’s running heroics raise thousands for cancer patients
A director at Tidyco has completed a gruelling running challenge, raising thousands of pounds for Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity.
Phil Mason, a production director at the Derby manufacturer, recently attempted to run 100 miles along canal towpaths, from Warrington to Shardlow, in just 24 hours.
However, adverse weather conditions during the challenge forced Phil to reset his goal – and he ended up covering 105 miles over a 34-hour period.
Phil originally set out to raise £5,000 – but he ended up raising more than £7,300, which he has recently donated to the Burton branch of the cancer services department.
The money will be put towards state-of-the-art oncology chairs which can be adjusted for patient comfort along with other life-affirming equipment such as cold caps, which help prevent hair loss for those undergoing treatment for cancer.
He chose this particular cause because a couple of Tidyco employees have recently used the service.
His preparation for the challenge was backed by a range of businesses and individuals, including Sarah Ball, of Balls2Marketing, Dean Jackson, of HUUB and Greg Whyte, from the University of Derby.
Phil said: “I want to extend my thanks to Tidyco, our customers and suppliers, who have all been financially generous with their support.
“The day itself, and the preparation that went into the day, went to plan but what I did not predict was the awful weather on the evening.
“It wasn’t until early evening the trouble started when the heavens opened.
“This was a turning point; I had to make the decision to push on and risk injury or worse or focus on finishing and with the hope of being able to raise more money.
“Having hit my head on a bridge and then on a branch in the dark, self-preservation seemed the sensible option.
“Recognition must be given to my youngest son Jordan, and his great efforts to keep me motivated, by running 50 miles with me.
“And Lisa Richards from Dains, who not only generously sponsored my cause but also did the last 25 miles with me.
“My wife, Mandy, and Kathryn my daughter, were also on hand with food and water throughout the challenge, keeping me motivated and sustained.
“Also having the support from my grandchildren, son-in-law, other family members, friends and workmates was a great help throughout the challenge.
“The time taken was longer than my initial plan, but it was for a very worthy cause.
“If you were to ask me if I would do something like this again, then that depends on who is asking but I always say; never say never!”
Jill Matthews, chief offer for the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity, said: “We are incredibly thankful to individuals like Phil who dedicate their time to undertake such amazing challenges in support of our charity.
“For Phil to train, and then run such a long distance, for the benefit of those patients undergoing treatment for cancer is incredibly kind and inspiring.
“The £7,300 raised will be used to buy equipment and improve patient comfort during the time patients spend at the hospital.
“It will make a huge difference to patients, and we are truly grateful.”
