Major new campaign launched to encourage short breaks

A new campaign has been launched to encourage visitors to choose Derby for a short break.

Called Take a Peak, the initiative, devised by Visit Peak District Derbyshire and Derby, the accredited Local Visitor Economy Partnership for the region made up of Visit Derby and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, explains why the city is a great short break destination.

Supported by UK Shared Prosperity funding and Derby City Council, the £50,000 summer campaign showcases the many things to see and do in the city.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, the city council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for city centre, regeneration, culture and tourism, recently helped launch the campaign.

She said: “I’m delighted to launch this new initiative to bring more visitors to Derby.

“Our businesses are still recovering post-Covid and increasing footfall has to be a high priority.

“We have so much to see and do in the city and the Take a Peak campaign really brings that into focus.”

The campaign focuses on six key themes: experiences, shopping, food and drink, culture, events and accommodation.

It is all showcased on the newly-refreshed Visit Derby website, the official tourism website for Derby.

The site has been redesigned with improved functionality and has lots of inspirational ideas for things to see and do in the city and surrounding areas, including what’s on, where to eat and drink and experiences.

The offer of a number of Marketing Derby Bondholders involved in hospitality are showcased as part of the campaign.

The partnership between Derby City Council’s Visit Derby service and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire was announced in April.

The two organisations, which are responsible for bringing more tourists to the city, county and Peak District, partnered up to gain Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) status from VisitEngland.

It was one of 12 new LVEPs to be announced and followed ‘The De Bois Review’ in 2021.

The change to destination management aims to encourage partnership working and increase visitor numbers in their area.

As part of LVEP status, the Visit Peak District Derbyshire and Derby team can access specialist training on topics like sustainability and accessibility, as well as support to make bids to the Government for funding to increase visitor numbers.

Councillor Peatfield said: “We are proud to be part of the new accredited Local Visitor Economy Partnership and look forward to more campaigns that will shine a light on Derby.”
