Kul’s pride as gritty crime drama airs
The founder of Ignite Your Inner Potential has spoken of his pride after a gritty crime drama he co-created aired on the BBC.
The first episode of Granite Harbour, which was co-created by Kul Mahay, was shown on BBC1 last Friday.
The three-part series follows Lance Corporal David Lindo as he arrives in Aberdeen as a new Police Scotland recruit, having just completed his final tour with the Royal Military Police.
He and his mentor, DCI Lara Bartlett are quickly thrown into the deep end as they investigate the murder of a well-known oil tycoon.
Starring Romario Simpson, who has previously starred in shows, including the BBC’s Noughts + Crosses and played a role in Disney’s Star Wars series Andor, is based on a story developed by Kul.
Kul, who spent more than 30 years working for Derbyshire Constabulary before setting up his business, said: “It is based on a story that I developed with my friend Adriel Leff and we simply couldn’t believe it when the BBC expressed an interest in commissioning it as a drama.
“If you are doubting yourself in any way right now or pondering on whether to pursue an idea, remember that you will only ever truly know if it will succeed if you at least try it.”
It’s not the first time that Kul has had a brush with fame. He recently appeared on Rob Rinder’s Interrogation Secrets; a 10-part series available on Apple TV and Prime that takes a unique look at the battles in the interview room between police and suspects in some of the most disturbing UK and US criminal cases in recent years.
Kul said: “My role was to analyse the interview process using my experience as a police officer.
“I was also able to use my current work in emotional intelligence to ‘read’ how both the police officers and suspects adjusted their language, body movements and emotions throughout the interview process.
“I found it fascinating to watch the different styles and approaches to investigating serious crimes.”
Granite Harbour continues on Friday nights on BBC1, with all three episodes now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
