In the latest edition of Marketing Derby’s Innovate Magazine, we meet Matt Clutterham and Jenny Jarvis – the couple behind Q Branch Consulting one of the most exciting new businesses on the Derby scene.

The Pride Park-based firm is a unique hybrid brand and human transformation agency on a mission to help local SMEs do great things by ripping up the rule book and thinking ‘big’.

The Q in Q Branch stands for questions. The pair passionately believe that it’s only by asking penetrating questions to business leaders who want a positive change to their bottom line – and by working with those open-minded enough to listen – that they will achieve the brilliant results they have already started to see for clients.

As Innovate finds out, less than a year after its founding, there is a queue of companies already wanting to benefit from Q Branch’s transformational work.

Talking about why they decided to establish the business in Derby, alongside an operation in London, Matt, who previously worked as a lighting designer in the West End, told Innovate: “We specifically chose Derby, with London. We did consider Birmingham, but felt that whereas Birmingham is quite established, Derby is up and coming.

“That’s more exciting because there is more potential here, and there is certainly more potential for businesses who are happy for growth.

“Derby is really going places fast, business-wise. Great British Railways is relocating here. It just feels the right place for us to be.

“We’ve only been up and running for a few months and it’s going so well so far. We’ve got lots of businesses coming to us for help.

“We’ve been putting a lot of time and effort and energy into making strong relationships, particularly in the Derby area, with business leaders.

“We’re finding Derby has a real buzz about it. It’s an exciting space to be in.”

Explaining the idea behind the business, life coach Jenny said: “We had the idea to form Q Branch after Matt was working with brands on their strategy, and I started to come along to some of the meetings.

“What we would find is that he would pose a question, and I – because of my training and background – would notice the body language of those in the room, which instantly tells me if someone is feeling uncomfortable, usually about a change that is being suggested.

“I would then be able to interject and quickly establish why there was that negative feeling. Often, we can ‘unblock’ these issues there and then and it’s much easier then for the business to be able to act on the route map we create.

“People should never forget that we might be living in a tech world but it’s ultimately humans who make decisions.”
