Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance has made an urgent plea for support after seeing a huge increase in the number of people asking for help.

According to the charity, it has seen a large rise in the number of people struggling with food poverty.

It said that an average of 50% of calls it receives are from new people.

On top of this, food costs have risen. Last year alone, DF4TA spent £110,000 on additional food to make sure it met demand.

But with supply slowing down and demand continuing to increase, the charity says it is just weeks away from running out of food.

In a statement it said: “We just don’t have the funds to keep spending £8,000 to £10,000 a month on food, including fresh fruit and veg that are so vital to help balance the nutrition of a food package.

“Long term, food banks in their traditional way of operating are not the answer and we are already transforming the way people are supported, including school uniform and household goods projects, but in the short term we must meet the immediate need.”

The charity is looking for more business to join its 100 Club – and donations of food items or finance to help it purchase items.

It also wants supporters to signpost to companies or other businesses who can help in any way.

DF4TA is also looking for more volunteers to help in all aspects of its work.

Among those who already volunteer is Ruth Broadhurst, of Broadhurst Digital, who helps on the phonelines, speaking to customers in need of food support.

She said: “Here at Broadhurst Digital, we are very proud to support the Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance.

“Their work in addressing food insecurity makes a real difference in our community.

“Being part of the Marketing Derby Bondholder community means we support each other and our city.

“Volunteering with DF4TA has been incredibly rewarding, providing a chance to give back and see the positive impact first-hand.

“I encourage fellow Bondholders to get involved. Together, we can support those in need and strengthen our community.”
