First Alstom-built monorail trains arrive in the Caribbean
The first trains built by Alstom for a new monorail system in the Dominican Republic have been delivered.
Local media have reported that the first of 13 four-car automated Innovia Monorail 300 trains have arrived in the Caribbean country.
They will run on a brand-new line in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, which, when complete, will boast 14 stations and have the capacity to transport up to 20,000 passengers per hour.
A consortium led by Alstom, which has its UK train manufacturing base in Derby, was selected to deliver the new monorail system, including its trains, back in August last year.
The deal was valued at 500 million euros, with Alstom’s share worth 370 million euros.
In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Alstom UK and Ireland wrote: “Our Derby-built monorail has arrived in Santiago.
“This will support faster and more efficient connections between the city’s northwest and southeast areas for passengers in the Dominican Republic.”
When complete, the 13-kilometre Santiago de los Caballeros monorail system will be the first of its kind in the country and in the Caribbean
Alstom’s scope within the contract includes system integration, testing and commissioning of the full system, as well as supplying the trains.
The contract was awarded to Consortium SIF — the consortium led by Alstom, by Fideicomiso para el Desarrollo del Sistema de Transporte Masivo (FITRAM).
Speaking when the contract was first awarded, Ivan Moncayo, Alstom’s managing director for the Dominican Republic, said: “This is a historic milestone in the development of sustainable mobility in the Dominican Republic, and we are proud to have been selected by FITRAM to deliver the country’s first monorail.
“The Dominican Republic is increasingly committed to developing and expanding urban mobility in the country and this investment for Santiago de los Caballeros will offer a modern, safe, comfortable, and reliable transportation option for the Santiaguense and visitors alike.”
