Derby’s first ever Korean restaurant proves huge hit with diners

The founder of Derby’s first ever Korean restaurant OMOMO Korean Street Food Restaurant + Bubble Tea has spoken of her delight after achieving a flood of positive reviews.

Initially opening to friends and family towards the end of last year, the business, which is based in The Strand, in the heart of Derby’s Cathedral Quarter, had its soft launch in January.

Since then, the venue, which serves authentic Korean street food and bubble tea, has gone from strength-to-strength – and has now announced its official launch.

The business is the brainchild of Lesley So, the entrepreneur behind healthy fizzy drinks firm So Good Kombucha – former winner of Marketing Derby’s Rising Star award [link to Rising Star page on website].

She said: “We have been in business for a few months now and have already had some fantastic reviews on Google.

“In particular, our Korean Fried Chicken and Army Stew Fondue have been singled out as ‘must try’ items.

“There are lots of vegan/vegetarian options too – even our fried chicken can be substituted with fried cauliflower. So, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

“We also serve delicious Korean-themed beverages. We are licensed and have lots of really interesting options such as soju cocktails, makgeolli, soju bombs and Korean beers, as well as bubble teas.

“Our aim is to serve authentic Korean street food, with each plate bursting with interesting flavours.”

As well as being an entrepreneur, Lesley is a champion of the marginalised in the community, particularly refugees and asylum seekers who have been forced to leave their homes in pursuit of safety and freedom.

Her other business, So Good Kombucha, was established with a social purpose that was sustainable and ethical. And, as Lesley explains, OMOMO is no different.

She said: “We are more than just a restaurant. We exist to create meaningful employment opportunities.

“OMOMO shares the same values as So Good Kombucha. We not only exist to create amazing tasting food that’s better for taste buds and body, but we are business that believes in doing good for the community.”
