Derby City Council‘s announcement of traders set to move into the revitalised Derby Market Hall is underway.

Following a £35.1m restoration, the Grade II-listed building will reopen its doors to the public on Saturday 24th May, marking a new era for Derby’s independent shopping, dining, and entertainment scene.

A curated mix of traditional and contemporary traders, including a range of food and beverage providers, will be in place when the Market Hall reopens its doors.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council said: “I am particularly excited to welcome the public into the revitalised Market Hall at a time when we are entering a new era for Derby’s independent shopping, dining, and entertainment scene. I am certain that the carefully curated set of traders will be met with much anticipation and will be a massive success for the Market Hall’s incredible offer.”

Located at the heart of the city centre, linking Derbion and St Peter’s Quarter with the Cathedral Quarter and Becketwell, the redeveloped Market Hall will play a key role in widening the diversity of the city centre and is expected to generate £3.64m for the local economy every year.

Amongst the first confirmed traders is Bailey’s Fishmongers which has been a trader in the Market Hall for 65 years and will continue to operate in their current location in the lock-up yard area.

Visitors looking to sample some local and international flavours will be attracted by the award-winning Colombo Street (Sri Lankan Restaurant of the Year at the Nation’s Curry Awards 2024) Back-A-Yard Cuisine’s Jamaican fayre (People’s Choice award from the British Street Food Awards 2024) as well as Caffé Prosecco and Nicco’s Gelato and Coffee.

SHIO is bringing a taste of Japan fusion to Derby; Cheeky Pancakes will offer an irresistible menu of sweet and savoury food inspired by popular Dutch street food; Tony’s Greek Street Food will offer signature dishes passed down through generations, whilst a unique twist on a classic will come from Gourmegg, with its innovative approach to Scotch eggs.

Locally sourced produce will be at the heart of the revitalised Market Hall, with Derbyshire’s Own, run by Derby Uncovered CIC, set to provide a wide and varied selection of groceries sourced exclusively from suppliers in Derby and Derbyshire.

Sustainable fashion will also be on offer through vintage fashion trader, Mardy Ducks and award-winning luxury fashion brand, The Oddities Store, which uses Afrocentric influences to blend timeless elegance with contemporary design.

The Derby City Lab, operated by Marketing Derby in partnership with the University of Derby will also be re-locating into the Market Hall.

Currently located in the Derbion, the Lab has already engaged with over 17,000 visitors on the transformation plans for Derby city centre and won the Estates Gazette award for Best Public-Private Partnership in the UK.
