Retail and leisure destination Derbion has announced it has chosen children and young people’s charity Umbrella as its new charity partner for 2024.

For its Derbion Cares initiative, the centre invited applications from regional charities.

After carefully reviewing more than 50 applications, Umbrella was selected.

Since 1986, Umbrella has been dedicated to working to improve the quality of life for disabled children, young people and their families in Derbyshire.

The charity supports children and young people aged five to 30 with additional needs, including physical, sensory, learning and behavioural disabilities, and aims to enhance the quality of life and promote inclusivity for young people living with disabilities in the region.

As part of its Derbion Cares initiative, Derbion will provide Umbrella with support throughout the next 12 months through ongoing fundraising, free in-centre activity space, employee volunteer time, centre resource, and more.

Derbion Cares was launched by the centre’s colleagues with the ongoing aim of supporting East Midlands-based charities with 12 months of fundraising and awareness activities.

Since the initiative was introduced in 2022, Derbion has partnered with four local charities: YMCA Derbyshire, RSPCA Derby & District and Safe and Sound, and Children First Derby.

Beth McDonald, managing director at Derbion, said: “Supporting wonderful regional charities which make a real difference to the lives of so many each year is exactly what our Derbion Cares initiative is all about.

“Umbrella provides support, resources and guidance to disabled children, young people and their families.

“We’re delighted to know that that our fundraising and awareness activity for the charity throughout 2024 will enable Umbrella to continue providing its vital work to children and young people, and their families, across Derbyshire.”

Emma Sarjeant, marketing and fundraising coordinator at Umbrella, added: “We are absolutely delighted to have been selected as Derbion’s charity of the year for 2024.

“Umbrella is currently a hidden gem of our city, and we are determined to promote the awareness of our services and support.

“We are confident that partnering with Derbion will help us achieve this mission, as well as provide a fantastic chance for us to add to our fundraising goals.”
