Remarkable Smiles has announced it has slashed the cost of check-ups for new patients to help those struggling to find NHS dental places.

The dental business, which has surgeries in Alvaston and the city centre, has decided to offer check-ups to the public at prices £10 cheaper than the current NHS rate, following feedback from patients.

Dr Amit Koshal, who runs Remarkable Smiles, said he decided to introduce the offer in order to “remove barriers to people taking up treatment”.

It intends to offer consultations to those who sign up for the reduced price of £18.50.

The check-ups will be performed by Dr Koshal himself, on designated days when he commits himself to seeing as many patients as possible.

He said: “We’ve been noticing for three to six months now from the media and our patients that people are really struggling with finding NHS dental places.

“Then, in April, the NHS put up prices by 8% or 9%. New patients can’t find one and existing patients can’t afford one. It’s having an impact on the ground.

“Me and my team were reminiscing on years ago when check-ups used to be under £20.

“All of a sudden it hit me: why don’t we do it again? Why don’t we, to help the community, just turn back the clock?”

The first session will take place on 29 June and then are likely to run fortnightly.

The sessions will take place at the Alvaston surgery, in London Road, but may eventually be rolled out to Curzon Street.

If the check-ups find that patients do need treatment, this may be offered at a discounted rate.
