A worker at Rolls-Royce is aiming to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity after his son battled meningitis as a baby.

James Kinsey, who lives on a boat at Mercia Marina, will take on the challenge in October to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity Meningitis Now.

James’ son, Ralph, battled meningitis at 12 weeks old – and it is not yet known whether there will be any lasting effects from the often-fatal illness until Ralph, who is now 18 months old, is older.

Meningitis Now is a pioneering force in the fight against meningitis, having invested over £12.7 million in early-stage research and playing a crucial role in introducing life-saving vaccines.

Its aftercare services provide invaluable support to those affected by meningitis, making a real difference in their recovery journey.

In recent years, the Burnaston plant has been developing a hydrogen-powered version of the Toyota Hilux.

On Toyota, the judges said: “This is a global business using the skills and talent of the Midlands’ automotive sector to help put the UK in the driving seat when it comes to hydrogen-fuelled vehicles.”

Also shortlisted was Derby-based medical products manufacturer Pennine Healthcare, which was a finalist in the Manufacturer of the Year (under £25m) category.
