College students take a step into cyber space

More than 100 Derby College Group students recently took part in an event dedicated to raising awareness of the exciting career opportunities within cyber security.

They were joined by 32 speakers and exhibitors for Step Into Cyber, which took place at the college’s Roundhouse.

With expert speakers, engaging discussions and interactive exhibitions, attendees gained valuable insights into this rapidly growing industry and how they can practically apply their learning to future careers.

Between December 2021 and March 2024, the number of cybersecurity professionals in the UK more than doubled, increasing by 128% from 28,500 to 65,000.

The event was coordinated by Lorena Acosta, student experience and pastoral support administrator at Derby College Group and student experience team manager Sahira Ashraf.

Lorena said: “Cyber security is a dynamic and ever-evolving field, and it was fantastic to see so many students engaging with industry professionals and discovering the wide range of opportunities available.

“Events like this are crucial in bridging the gap between education and industry, helping to shape the cyber professionals of the future.”
