New fund makes its first donation
A new fund launched by a group of Marketing Derby Bondholders, which aims to raise money for people and organisations who need it the most, has made its first donation.
The Friends of Derby 500 Club was recently launched with the backing of Rachel Morris, from Relate, Mark Richardson, from BB&J Commercial, Neil White, from Black & White PR and Jane Witherow, from Derby City Council.
It aims to pull together 500 like-minded people, who each set up a standing order for £1 a week into a fund, giving the group £500 a week to give to someone who needs it.
The community of 500 then keep an ear out for local people, friends, neighbours, colleagues, worthy causes and local charities – and can nominate them to receive the £500.
The group has now made its first donation – thanks in no small part to a “local company” which was so impressed with the concept that it decided to give the group 10 years’ worth of payments up front.
The first recipient is a 17-year-old from Derby, whose identity has been protected.
He was referred to a local charity for support after he was groomed online and sexually assaulted.
He has a passion for cycling and was looking to join a cycling club.
However, he recently damaged his own bike in a crash, which was beyond economic repair. The donation from the 500 Club will help him buy a new bike and enable him to join a cycling club.
