YMCA students to create wildlife sanctuary
Students from YMCA Derbyshire’s college arm are working with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to design a ‘peaceful area’ of a country park for the community.
The students at YMCA Key College have been given a small plot in a corner of Shipley Park to turn into a wildlife sanctuary.
The aim of the project is for the young people to learn all about nature and the benefits wildlife can have on communities.
YMCA Key College provides opportunities for young people who have struggled with mainstream education – and for many students this experience will be a first.
Julia Hodder, head of training and education at YMCA Key College, said: “We are so grateful to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for giving our students this opportunity. Learning about the local environment is something many have never done before.
“Simply getting outside with their classmates, getting some fresh air and enjoying the outdoors is great mentally for them too. We can’t wait to see what their peaceful corner looks like at the end of their work.”
YMCA Key College is looking for businesses and organisations in Derbyshire to partner with. To get involved e-mail training@ymcaderbyshire.org.uk.
