Major city centre student apartments scheme given go-ahead
A major student apartments scheme for Derby city centre has been given the go-ahead.
The Agard Street development, by Trent Pads, will provide 93 bedrooms across 69 units, adding to the city's offer of student accommodation and bringing welcome footfall to the city centre.
It was the second time that the plans to build the block at 8-14 Agard Street had come before Derby City Council's planning committee,
Previously, there had been concerns about the scheme being too near the road, which might create a “canyon effect”, trapping pollution in the street.
However, Trent Pads revised its plans, moving the building, which at its highest point is eight storeys high, back four metres from the roadside.
Having addressed this issue, the application was passed unanimously by the council.
Trent Pads has also been asked to “contribute” to the council’s air quality action plan proposals in order to offset the scheme’s negative impact on air quality.
John Forkin, managing director of the city's investment promotion agency, Marketing Derby, said: “It is great to see these plans being approved, bringing more investment into Derby.
“An increase in student residents to the city centre brings much-needed footfall and vibrancy in an area that is fast-becoming a central hub for university and student activity.”
