New employment scheme launched
Derventio Housing Trust has launched a new employment scheme aimed at helping young homeless and unemployed people back into work.
The social landlord has just appointed the first of three workers to run its new Skills for the Future project, a two-year scheme aimed at helping 18-to-25-year-olds who are classified as NEETS – meaning they’re not engaged in education, employment or training – get onto, or back onto, a career path.
The scheme, which will operate across Derbyshire, is part-funded by a grant from the European Social Fund for young people and will provide everyone who takes part with one-to-one personalised support.
The scheme formally started last month and is headed up by work mentor Joe Michael, who is getting the scheme up and running for Derventio before the other workers come on board.
Jackie Carpenter, assistant director of strategy at Derventio, said: “It isn’t about getting somebody into just any form of employment in order to tick a box, it’s about looking at their background and working with them to find something that really enthuses them, so that the work they do is sustainable and will see them establish themselves in a new role for the long term.
“Joe and his team will need to be there to help them through many ups and downs and it will take much commitment on both sides but from the results we have seen in the past we are confident that this approach will help to change their lives.”
