Hundreds of carers of disabled people are being given priority Covid-19 vaccinations after a link-up between Disability Direct and Derby City Council.

Three hundred clients use the payroll services of Disability Direct to employ 450 carers who will qualify for the vaccinations.

Amo Raju, chief executive at Disability Direct, said: “The council asked us to get in touch with our clients and inform their personal assistants that they can be vaccinated at Derby Arena.

“We are pleased to play our part in getting social care staff vaccinated at the earliest opportunity.”

Kay Eyre, carer for her disabled daughter Catherine, said: “I think it is amazing that the personal assistants are being given the chance to have the Covid vaccine so soon.

“It will mean once my daughter, my husband and myself have had the vaccine, my daughter will be able to start resuming some sort of normality.”

Meanwhile, Disability Direct is also giving out Covid self-testing kits and PPE to disabled people in the city.

Amo said: “Clients can come to our centre on Pride Park or we can deliver to homes for disabled people who are isolating or do not have access to transport.

“Our offer is primarily aimed at those who are asymptomatic but are unable to leave their home.”

Tests will be done on the same day as booking. If anyone has symptoms, they can get in touch by calling 01332 299449, Text Relay 18001 01332 299449 or email info@disabilitydirect.com.
