Future women in STEM
As part of International Women’s Day 2020, a wide range of companies organised hands on activities for female students from Bondholder Derby College Group and local secondary schools.
Companies including Bondholders Rolls-Royce, Bowmer+Kirkland and Bombardier took part at the Women in STEM event organised at fellow Bondholder The Roundhouse to highlight the opportunities available in industry.
During the event, female students from Derby College Group, Da Vinci Academy, St Benedict Catholic Voluntary Academy and Lees Brook Community School joined College students in Professional Construction, Engineering, Business, Steps and Applied Science to work with a team from Belper-based chemical company Lubrizol to test how different lubricants affected vehicle speed.
Meanwhile leading construction and development group Bowmer+Kirkland set the students a challenge to make a tower using dried spaghetti and marshmallows.
Emma Hibbert, Senior Quantity Surveyor at Bowmer+Kirkland, said: “The task is all about design, team-work and problem solving and the young people have really engaged with the challenge. It has also been a welcome opportunity to show students the different careers available in our industry.”
