Rolls-Royce to speak on skills and education
As well as city leaders, Derby’s largest private sector employer – Rolls-Royce – will be flying the flag for the city at this year’s Midlands UK Forum for Growth.
The second day of the three-day virtual event will focus on collaboration to achieve economic growth for the region.
Skills and education will play a crucial part in the future prosperity of the Midlands – and major employers like Rolls-Royce have an important role to play.
On Wednesday 25th November, a panel discussion will take place at the Midlands UK Forum for Growth called Skills and Education – Building a Brighter Future.
Among the panellists will be Nicola Swaney, education outreach manager at Rolls-Royce.
She leads Rolls-Royce’s STEM Outreach strategy, which aims to enthuse and inspire young people about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
Her role is focused on nurturing the company’s future skills pipeline, increasing diversity and inclusion and championing the range of early career pathways available across the business.
She works with schools, external partners, STEM Ambassadors and governor employees, in order to inspire young people.
She is also a board member for the Government’s Opportunity Area in Derby, which is aimed at improving social mobility and attainment among the city’s most disadvantaged children.
At the Midlands UK Forum for Growth, the panel will discuss how the public and private sector can work together better to produce the next generation of workers.
It will also explore how the Midlands will equip itself to resource the growth sectors.
Rolls-Royce is currently on a mission to reach young people in all parts of the UK, encouraging them to pursue a career in engineering regardless of their background or level of education.
Globally, Rolls-Royce plans to reach 25 million people across the world in STEM by 2030.
It has already reached many millions of people by providing STEM activities, role models, resources, support and advice to schools, young people, through its STEM partnerships and the local community.
