Radleigh Crane Rises Over City

A Radleigh Group crane has been erected at the construction company’s commercial development just outside the city in Bath Street. This arrival at the site of the old Bath Street Mill centre signifies the end of the preparatory phase of the three-year project, and the start of the construction stages of what will be one of the finest ExtraCare complexes in the country.

The fact building work is now starting in earnest pays testament to the expertise and tenacity of the Radleigh Group, with the Pride Park-based company able to meet the needs of Derby City Council housing and planning departments, as well as the demands of the Environment Agency, where others could not.

The past year has seen first demolition and then ground preparation work, all culminating in the arrival of the Radleigh crane. It is an exciting time for all involved with the ground breaking project, as Radleigh Group joint managing director Chris Neve confirms:

“After so much hard work, negotiation and problem solving, it is very gratifying to have Radleigh so visible on the Derby City skyline once more. It’s good news for us and also very positive for the local employment market. We can now start getting the new building to rise from the ashes of the old mill, and creating a significant number of jobs for the tradesmen that will help us make it happen.”

“The site sits in three separate areas of environmental interest and conservation, so there are many factors to consider when formulating plans. There has been a remarkable level of commitment shown by Derby City Council and all of the consultants involved with the project, especially as the location forms part of one of only 28 UNESCO World Heritage sites in the UK.”

“It is a great feeling to have all parties pulling in the same direction, and the fact we’re starting the building phase early is particularly gratifying.”

Construction of the Derby Homes ExtraCare complex for the over 55s at Bath Street is scheduled to take two years, and cost in the region of £10.3 million. Once finished, the four-storey block will comprise of 82 self-contained apartments, a wide variety of communal areas, shops, a hair salon and ground floor café. the location on the edge of the city centre will offer the residents easy access to all of Derby’s amenities, while also offering on site NHS care for those who need it.
