Gastro pub listed among UK’s best for a Sunday roast
The Elephant and Peacock has been included in a list compiled by a national newspaper of the best locations for Sunday lunch.
The Milford gastro pub, which is on the A6 between Duffield and Belper, has recently been included in The Daily Telegraph’s ‘20 brilliant places for a Sunday roast’.
It finds itself rubbing shoulders with Michelin-starred establishments and famous London names, such as Claridges, in the list.
The Elephant and Peacock first opened its doors two years ago this month as the sister restaurant to Lotus Indian Kitchen, which is at Mercia Marina, near Willington.
An Indian gastro pub, it was created inside the former Strutt Arms, a building which was originally constructed by the Strutt family more than 120 years ago.
With space for around 100 covers across its bar, restaurant and conservatory areas, its menu consists of street food and starter options, as well as curries.
It particularly specialises in taking traditional pub classics and giving them an Indian twist, with dishes such as its Amritsari Fish and Chips and Biryani, which is served as a puff pastry pie.
However, The Elephant and Peacock has only recently branched out into serving Sunday roasts, which has made its inclusion in The Daily Telegraph’s list an unexpected – but welcome – surprise.
Sunny Chandoke, who launched the Elephant and Peacock with his brother Harcharan, said: “We started doing roast dinners not long ago, so it was a surprise, but an honour to appear in a listing of 20 of the best options for Sunday lunch in the UK by a national newspaper.
“It shows the versatility we have here to offer a reputable Indian menu, as well as simultaneously producing a Sunday roast menu, which has gained national acclaim alongside Michelin-starred restaurants.
“I’m immensely proud of our team for the work they have put in to achieve this level of recognition.”
