A hundred years of delivering construction excellence

In the latest edition of Marketing Derby’s Innovate Magazine we profile construction firm Bowmer + Kirkland – a company responsible for creating some of Derby’s most iconic buildings.

In recent years, the firm has built the new Moorways Sports Village and Water Park and the stunning Derby Arena.

Right now, it is busy delivering another important building for Derby – the £45.8 million performance arena and conference centre at Becketwell, which will help transform one of the city’s most challenged locations and boost the city’s appeal as a leisure destination.

The Derbyshire business has a long and distinguished history of delivering construction excellence, not just in Derby, but regionally and nationally.

Still a family-run enterprise, B+K began life in 1923 in Heage and remains headquartered there but has now become a £1.15 billion turnover business, directly employing 1,750 people.

It has offices in Reading, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sunderland, Motherwell, Newark, Cambridge and Bristol and a client list of some of the biggest names in the UK, including Amazon, Next, Center Parcs and several government departments.

Warner Brothers chose it to deliver its Harry Potter Experience visitor centre and the firm helped construct Media City UK in Salford.

Speaking about the firm’s ongoing work on the Becketwell performance venue, Sarah Millington, B+K Group PR Manager, told Innovate: “Although we are very geographically spread these days, working in Derbyshire is still very special to us.

“We always like building in our home county and it’s really important to see a project like this growing out of the ground, giving the people of Derby and the region another reason to come into the city centre and spend time and money here.

“Hopefully it will be a catalyst for further investment and bring lots of independent bars and restaurants to the area.

“Last year, when we began the project, it was our 100-year anniversary, and it was really fitting to be doing something like this so close to home.

“We have been in Derbyshire since 1923 and have done a lot of work in the city, including schemes such as Moorways and Derby Arena, which was an Olympic legacy project.

“It’s a real source of pride for our teams, many of whom are local, to be able to build such landmarks and fantastic facilities for local people.”
