Plea made for King’s Honours nominations

An appeal has been launched for more nominations for the King’s Honours to ensure individuals in Derby and Derbyshire who make an important contribution to their community are recognised.

The Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Liz Fothergill CBE, wants to see more people from the city and county put forward for a national honour.

National honours are for those who demonstrate exceptional service and achievement, go “above and beyond the call of duty”, show sustained delivery and moral courage against the odds and have the respect of their peers.

They recognise people who make a real difference to the lives of people – for example, supporting work to tackle discrimination, helping improve the lives of vulnerable people or helping support children and young people to achieve their potential.

They also celebrate those who aid social mobility, enhancing life chances and tackling deprivation, dealing with environmental problems and the protection of the environment or working to improve the economic prosperity of local people.

Mrs Fothergill said: “I am immensely proud and often awed as I hear of amazing and sustained achievements brought about by the hard work, selflessness, and commitment to their communities of individuals from across the whole city and county.

“I would like to see more of our remarkable Derbyshire individuals recognised and celebrated with a national honour – so I would encourage you all to make a nomination when you witness true excellence and a passion to improve the lives of others.”

According to Mrs Fothergill, anyone can make a nomination – but often people are overlooked because it is assumed that someone else is going to do it.

Nominations should highlight the special qualities of the person, show what that person has specifically, personally done, and explain how they have “gone the extra mile”.

They also need to demonstrate the impact the person has made, with supporting facts and figures, as well as supporting letters.
