Special mention for trust’s cottage project

A once derelict cottage belonging to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has received a special mention at a set of national architecture awards.

Aqueduct Cottage, which stands on Cromford Canal, near Lea Bridge, was shortlisted in the prestigious RIBAJ MacEwan Awards, which recognise architecture for the common good.

The 19th century cottage, which was once owned by the family of Florence Nightingale, was nominated in the Heritage Renewal category.

And although the project to restore the cottage didn’t win, it was given a special mention by judges.

Lisa Witham, director of wilder communities at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, said:  “We are delighted Aqueduct Cottage has received this special mention.

“The project would not have been possible without the hard work of our passionate volunteers and the generous donations of our supporters and members.

“Our hope is to continue making this a place for people to enjoy for years to come.”
