London Embassy: Inward investment and education can unlock social mobility

Inward investment and education have key roles to play in tackling Derby’s inequalities – that was the main message delivered to attendees of Marketing Derby’s latest London Embassy event.

Held last night in the stunning surroundings of the Old Library, inside the Grade I-listed Guildhall, the City of London’s civic and ceremonial centre, around 200 guests, including Bondholders, investors, ambassadors and politicians from both the Houses of Lords and Commons, came together to hear about the latest developments in Derby.

Backed by headline partner Smith Partnership – along with event partners the University of Derby and Repton School, the embassy heard presentations from a number of keynote speakers, including city leaders, investors and academics.

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, said: “The setting of the Old Library was symbolic of the next stage of Derby’s journey as a city.

“Inward investment is a tool for social mobility. Yes, we have the high salaries and the talent – but also, we are a city of poor social mobility and inequalities – and that is something we tried to highlight at this year’s Embassy.”

Among the keynote speakers was Councillor Baggy Shanker, leader of Derby City Council, who spoke about the many exciting developments in the city that are due to come to fruition.

Helen Gordon, chief executive of Grainger Plc, explained why her company had decided to invest in Derby’s first-ever build-to-rent apartments scheme – The Condor.

And Professor Keith McLay and Dr Jenna Waters, both from the University of Derby, talked about how the university’s civic activities were making a real impact on both the city and county.

In his closing message, Bob Betts, chairman of Marketing Derby, told potential investors in the room: “You’ve heard the stories tonight of the inspirational businesses and fantastic educational institutions in Derby.

“So come on up, whether by train or car, come and visit us in Derby.”

On the night, a team from GoldBox Productions filmed proceedings – and is currently putting together a film, which will be released next week.
