Architects to help breathe new life into historic store
Matthew Montague Architects has announced it is working with clothing retailer Brigdens to breathe new life into an historic store in the city centre.
The firm is working on alterations and changes to the former Emily Brigden store, in Iron Gate.
Brigdens began in the late 1800s and has had a retail presence in Derby ever since – firstly opening a store in the Market Place and then in Iron Gate.
Following works at the former Emily Brigden store, which closed at the start of this year, both stores will relocate into the newly refurbished building.
The former Emily Brigden store is at 15-17 Iron Gate and is a Grade II listed building.
According to Matthew Montague Architects, the building is notable for its late 18th Century construction, as well as its Georgian and Victorian design features.
It has been identified as an important part of the Iron Gate Conservation Area and is considered a significant landmark in the city’s history.
The building was originally two separate houses that were later combined into one.
Over the years, it has had a variety of uses, including a bakery, a watchmaker’s shop, a printing office and a carpet warehouse.
In the early 20th century, it was used as a shop and warehouse for a local department store until it became Emily Brigden for more than 30 years.
In a statement, Matthew Montague Architects said: “The exterior will be given a refresh to give the store a new look, but the elegant façade and exquisite detailing will remain as is.
“Interior alterations will provide Bridgens with the functionality of space that they require. The new store will open in the autumn.”
