YMCA Derbyshire has announced that its annual sleep out, which saw several fellow Marketing Derby Bondholders take part, has raised more than £24,000 for people facing homelessness.

The Sleep Easy 2023 event saw more than 70 people take part in a sleep out at Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s Incora County Ground.

The funds raised will be used to invest in further mental health support from YMCA Derbyshire’s in-house psychotherapist, providing free or very low-cost food to young people and community members, and engaging young people in as many different activities as possible from horticulture sessions to employability programmes.

Among those who took part in the sleep out was Molly Norman, from Nielsen McAllister.

She said: “I’ve always been one of those people that can sleep anywhere. But I have officially met my match – sleeping rough was awful.

“Don’t get me wrong, it was an incredible event. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie among the volunteers, all wrapped up in blankets around the fire and helping each other out. The organisers at YMCA did an outstanding job.

“But, even in our cosy (and brilliantly designed) box; it was loud, uncomfortable, cold, and horrendous.

“When it came to packing up and heading home, I was very aware of how lucky I was to be going to a safe, warm bed.

“Although it was a memorable experience, it’s not something I would wish on anyone, and it’s changed my perspective on what it means to sleep rough.”

Gillian Sewell, chief executive of YMCA Derbyshire, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the success of this year’s Sleep Easy and can’t thank everyone enough for participating, donating, and nominating – you are all incredible.

“We provide supported housing to over 193 individuals every night and without the help of our local community and businesses, none of that would be possible.

“Events like Sleep Easy are essential, especially during a time of uncertainty and impossible personal challenges.

“The cost-of-living crisis has hit everyone differently, but our local community is incredible. They adapt and unite to help those most in need.

“Your support really does make all the difference – thank you.”

Sleep Easy takes place every year and satellite events are still taking place over the coming weeks with Repton School and scout groups hosting their own.
