Construction giant packs a punch at national awards

Construction firm Bowmer + Kirkland is celebrating after bagging a brace of national industry awards for adopting technology that can reduce emissions and fuel costs.

The Derbyshire-based firm won Net Zero Carbon Initiative of the Year and the overall Initiative of the Year at the recent British Construction Industry Awards.

The firm was recognised for its Punch Flybrid energy saving programme, which has helped reduce carbon emissions, while making cost savings.

Dan Birkinshaw, sustainability manager at Bowmer + Kirkland, said: “We are delighted to collect these awards, which recognise our commitment to carbon reduction on our construction sites with this smart tech.

“We are now removing thousands of tons of carbon from the environment and saving thousands of pounds on our fuel bills on our sites with tower cranes, mast climbers and hoists.”

Developed for Formula 1, the Punch Flybrid technology is enabling B+K to be at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions from construction site plant and equipment.

It uses a robust and durable flywheel energy storage system to significantly downsize generators powering tower cranes and other dynamically used equipment on site.

Bowmer + Kirkland was the first to install two Punch Power 200 machines on one site.

It now has 10 units on its sites and plans to roll them out to all sites with tower cranes.

Dan said: “This initiative is a key part of our Zero by 40 programme and is key to driving down carbon emissions from our construction sites.

“Our innovative approach is helping to save the environment and supporting new technology, which will benefit the entire construction industry.”
