Derby schemes recognised in East Midlands property awards

The East Midlands Property Awards have recognised several Bondholders and Derby developments amongst its 2022 winners.

The Awards, run by Insider Media, recognise the region’s top commercial and residential property deals, developments, builders, developers and personalities.

At the annual awards night last week, Derby City Council’s Moorways Sports Village was recognised as Construction Project of the Year, with Bowmer +Kirkland recognised amongst the partners who delivered the complex project on time and on budget, snag and defect-free.

The award for Developer of the Year went to St James Securities, the developer behind Derby’s £200m Becketwell scheme which is playing a huge role in the regeneration of the city centre.

The Becketwell scheme includes the city’s first build-to-rent scheme, to be operated by Grainger plc and a new 3,500-capacity performance venue.

On receipt of the award, managing director at St James Securities, Oliver Quarmby said: “To win the Developer of the Year award is a tremendous achievement and a real vote of confidence in the work we are doing in Derby.

“The Becketwell regeneration scheme will be transformational for the city of Derby. The BTR scheme will enable hundreds of people to live in high-quality homes in the heart of the city. It will revitalise this long-neglected area of the city and contribute to improving the overall vibrancy and attraction of the city centre.”

“Our exciting performance venue will bring an outstanding, modern arena to the city, which will fill a significant gap in the city’s cultural landscape and will be key to the future reinvigoration and repositioning of Derby city centre.”

St James Securities’ securing of the £45.8m performance venue as part of Phase 2 of Becketwell, alongside Rigby & Co, Derby City Council and operator ASM Global was Highly Commended in the Property Deal of the Year category.

Derby City Council had further cause to celebrate on the night with the city’s Bemrose School being Highly Commended in the category of Regeneration and Restoration Project of the Year, on which fellow bondholder Morecrofts provided support. Morecrofts were also part of the Space Park Leicester team, with main contractor Bowmer + Kirkland, which won Sustainable Development of the Year.

Tim Garratt, chief executive, Blackstar Advisory, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

After previously working at Savills and FHP, Garratt joined Innes England in 1999, where he was managing director and later chairman. He is known for his roles in key sites including the Boots Enterprise Zone and Castle Meadow Campus, as well as the promotion of the region at the annual MIPIM property conference.
