Latest Innovate Magazine celebrates ‘Best of British’
The latest edition of Marketing Derby’s Innovate Magazine has a distinctly patriotic feel as it celebrates some of our Bondholders who have this year received Queen’s Awards.
The autumn edition of the quarterly publication, which provides a window into the amazing and inspiring Derby and Derbyshire business sector, puts the spotlight on businesses who have enjoyed awards success.
In what is still the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year, the autumn edition not only profiles some our winners – but looks at how we can get more of our great companies to put themselves forward for what is considered to be the ultimate business accolade.
Among this year’s bumper crop of Derbyshire winners was metal recycling and waste management specialist Ward, which scooped a Queen’s Award for International Trade.
Innovate sits down for a Q&A with the firm’s operations director Donald Ward to find out the secret behind the success of this family-run business.
And this edition’s Talking Business segment brings together Queen’s Award winners past and present to discuss what it takes to win one of these prestigious accolades.
One business that is no stranger to winning awards is Morley Hayes. Innovate meets Andrew and Robert Allsop, the brothers behind this stunning hotel, restaurant and golf course complex, who have recently celebrated yet more national recognition.
Morley Hayes has won numerous awards for its food offer – and a business that is also rapidly growing a reputation for its cuisine is Mezzo.
Situated on Pride Park, the new healthy food restaurant, founded by Skevy Ioannides and her partner David Meredith, has proved an instant hit with diners. Innovate finds out their recipe for success.
Several new businesses were created during the pandemic – one of which was letterbox gift company Colleague Box.
Founded by Adam and Natalie Bamford, the company’s growth has been rapid – and shows no sign of abating post-pandemic, as Innovate finds out.
In this edition, we also meet Fiona Moffat, the inspirational and dynamic leader of Timms Solicitors, a law firm which has been practising for 130 years.
Fiona herself has been in law for 40 years – and would have started in her profession around the time when Sinfonia Viva, the Derby-based orchestra for the East Midlands, was first formed. The orchestra is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary – and began the year with a new chief executive at the helm in the form of Lucy Galliard.
Innovate catches up with Lucy to find out how she is settling in – and her plans for ‘Viva’ going forward.
And we meet up with Rachel North, the deputy chief executive of Derby City Council, who is helping to lead a conversation on ambitions for the city going forward.
The council has kicked off the discussion with its Towards a New Vision for Derby City Centre document, which is packed with suggestions and questions about the city’s future regeneration – with the people of Derby being urged to give their views.
The purpose of city centres, particularly in the post-pandemic world, is something that many cities like Derby are currently grappling with – and forms the basis of Marketing Derby managing director John Forkin’s Last Word column, in which he asks, ‘What makes a city?’.
