Urban forest events aim to spark climate conversations

A series of events are set to take place at Derby’s newly installed ‘urban forest’ designed to start conversations about climate change, biodiversity and the role people can play in protecting the environment.

Made up of 125 trees and hundreds of shrubs, the Forest for the Future, backed by Derby City Council, has recently been created in the Market Place.

It will be the setting for a series of family-friendly events all centred around the environment.

From 23 to 31 July, Down to Earth Derby will be there, holding activities designed to inspire and empower people to grow and nurture their relationship with the outdoors and create a city to be proud of.

And between the same dates, representatives from Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust will be speaking about its canal and river projects, including their E-boat, as well as displaying and demonstrating ‘Artemis’, a plastic collection robot.

Jamie Quince-Starkey, founder and director of Down to Earth Derby, said: “We are incredibly proud and excited to bring to Derby city centre ‘A Force for Nature at Forest for the Future’, alongside friends and partners of environmental, community and nature-based organisations.

“We want to inspire and empower others to be the change they wish to see in the world, to be part of it and be their very own force of nature.

“To have this event alongside this amazing forest in the Market Place is revolutionary in itself and shows what Derby as a city wants for its future – and that future is looking great.”
