Rolls-Royce nuclear power station business to create 400 jobs

A business set up by Rolls-Royce to develop a new generation of mini-nuclear power stations has announced it is to create 400 jobs.

Rolls-Royce SMR (Small Modular Reactor) is to create the jobs across Derby and Warrington.

Rolls-Royce, which has its civil aerospace and defence divisions in the city, wants the new subsidiary to play a big part of the UK’s net zero agenda.

It also wants it to play a key role in achieving the Government’s British Energy Security Strategy, which pledges to accelerate the expansion of nuclear by delivering the equivalent of one nuclear reactor per year instead of one per decade.

The Rolls-Royce SMR programme is the first of its kind in the UK to be focused on developing a factory-built nuclear power plant that is deliverable and scalable at a global level.

Rolls-Royce has said that a single mini power station could occupy around a tenth of the size of a conventional nuclear plant and generate enough power for around one million homes.

Its plans could create 40,000 UK jobs when fully operational by 2050 and generate £52 billion in economic benefit.

Having begun the design assessment process with UK regulators, Rolls-Royce SMR now needs to significantly increase its workforce.

It has appointed recruitment specialists RPOne, part of Salford-based global recruiter, Morson Group, to support its largest recruitment campaign to date.

Roles will be open to experienced nuclear professionals, young talent and graduates alike, creating a diverse workforce.
