Bondholders involved in government plan to boost region's economy

Marketing Derby Bondholders are among a group of top local businesses who are helping with the Government’s plan to create jobs and boost the Midlands economy.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick recently convened the first ever meeting of the Midlands Engine Business Council, which is made up of around 30 entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Co-chaired by Mr Jenrick, who is the Midlands Engine Ministerial Champion, and Sir John Peace, chairman of the Midlands Engine, among the attendees were Nick Crossfield, managing director at Alstom, Matthew Hammond, Midlands regional leader at PwC, Professor Kathryn Mitchell, vice-chancellor at the University of Derby, Kavita Oberoi, managing director at Oberoi Consulting and Oberoi Business Hub and Stephen Vickers, chief executive of the Devonshire Group.

Together, they discussed ambitious plans to deliver jobs, skills and investment throughout the Midlands as the region looks to build back better and grasp opportunities outside of the European Union.

The industry leaders also discussed how to overcome challenges posed by the pandemic and committed to working closer together to grow the global footprint of the Midlands.

The new council has been formed as part of the Government’s plan to level up the regions – and will meet biannually.

Kavita, boss of Oberoi Consulting, which develops innovative clinical systems for the NHS and pharmaceutical industry, said: “As head of two entrepreneurial businesses, I was delighted to have the opportunity to be part of the first meeting where we discussed ambitious plans that will deliver jobs, skills and investment in the region.

“There were also fascinating debates about how we can build back better and grasp opportunities outside the European Union, as well as strategies for overcoming challenges posed by the pandemic and opportunities for working together to grow the global footprint of the Midlands.”

Mr Jenrick said: “Since the Industrial Revolution, the Midlands has been a major driving force of the UK economy.

“The region has led the way in industries as diverse as automotive, medtech, aerospace and finance and is home to many famous British brands.

“This proud tradition of innovation will play a key part in Britain’s global agenda and post-pandemic recovery.

“That is why I am proud to be bringing together such an impressive group providing a stronger voice for businesses across the Midlands as we work together to boost prosperity across the region.

Sir John said: “Our business council will provide challenge, embed the voice of industry in our strategic planning and act as a valued conduit for industry to government exchange, focused on the needs of the Midlands.

“It will be an important part of our work in partnership as together we take bold steps towards recovery and green growth, for every part of the Midlands Engine.”
