New plans for Derby Market Place

Since opening its doors on 24th July, more than 6,000 people have enjoyed the vibrant al fresco dining experience of Derby Market Place, created by Bondholders Derby City Council, Derby LIVE and Katapult, with Visit Derby, as part of the work of the Derby Economic Recovery Task Force to help boost footfall and help hospitality businesses hit by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Plans to broaden the offer in autumn/winter have been announced as the area is to be transformed into a hub for outdoor entertainment and themed markets.

Councillor Robin Wood, Derby City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, said: “The launch of outdoor dining at Derby Market Place has been a great success, and my thanks go to everyone who worked so hard and so quickly to get it all off the ground. Not only has it boosted local businesses, it has encouraged people to return to the city centre in a way which makes them feel safe and brought some much-needed vibrancy to the area. We plan to build on this success by expanding what’s on offer in this space, and I will be excited to see what happens there during the Autumn and Winter.”

During October, a series of themed Sessions will feature bands and live entertainment performing on a new stage in Derby Market Place, including local bands, open mic, sounds and sights from Caribbean carnival, and jazz. Continuing the success of the al fresco dining experience, visitors will be able to pre-order food for delivery or bring their own takeaway. From Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th October, celebrate Derby’s reputation for locally-produced beer and cider at The Beer Sessions.

The Sessions are part of Derby City Council’s initiative to help support the city’s economy as it re-emerges from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, creating a cultural experience where people can enjoy live entertainment in their small groups, in a way which makes everyone feel safe.

All events will be held in a Covid-safe environment in line with the most up to date government guidelines.

The chalet seating areas around the outside of the current space will be transformed into attractive stalls for a series of themed markets throughout autumn and the festive period, starting with the Vegan Market on Saturday 7th November.

Booking is required for tables for all Sessions. Prices vary and full pricing information can be found at derbymarketplace.co.uk along with more details about the autumn Sessions and markets scheduled.
